Affirmative Action and Racial Segregation
نویسنده
چکیده
Prior research suggests that statewide affirmative action bans reduce minority representation at selective colleges while leaving overall minority college enrollment unchanged. The effect of these bans on racial segregation across colleges, as measured by standard exposure and dissimilarity indexes, has not yet been estimated directly and is theoretically ambiguous due to a Ushaped relationship between minority enrollment and college selectivity. This paper uses variation in the timing of affirmative action bans across states to estimate their effects on racial segregation, finding that affirmative action bans have in some cases increased segregation across colleges but in other cases have actually reduced it. In particular, early affirmative action bans in states with highly selective public universities appear to be associated with less segregation, whereas more recent affirmative action bans appear to be associated with more segregation.

Firm Racial Segregation and Affirmative Action in the Highway Construction Industry
In this paper I document that highway construction firms in California, particularly those owned by Blacks and Asians, exhibit considerable racial segregation in that they are disproportionately located in zip codes with the greatest concentration of own-race residents. I find that segregated firms serve a larger market than minority-owned firms that are not segregated, and this effect is conce...

This Article defends racial integration as a central goal of race-based affirmative action. Racial integration of mainstream institutions is necessary both to dismantle the current barriers to opportunity suffered by disadvantaged racial groups, and to create a democratic civil society. Integration, conceived as a forward-looking remedy for de facto racial segregation and discrimination, makes ...

The premise of this symposium is that the principle and ideal developed in Brown v. Board of Education and its successor cases lie at the heart of the rationale for affirmative action in higher education. The principle of the school desegregation cases is that racial segregation is an injustice that demands remediation. The ideal of the school desegregation cases is that racial integration is a...
متن کاملIncentives to Identify: Racial Identity in the Age of Affirmative Action.
We link data on racial self-identification with changes in state-level affirmative action policies to ask whether racial self-identification responds to economic incentives. We find that after a state bans affirmative action, multiracial individuals who face an incentive to identify under affirmative action are about 30 percent less likely to identify with their minority groups. In contrast, mu...

The old American dilemma was the contradiction between the racial caste system and the American liberal conscience. The Civil Rights Revolution of the Sixties abolished the old racial caste system in its legal aspects, but failed to completely alter the relation between racial groups in America in a way that satisfied the aspirations of the Peoples of Color. In response to this a system of raci...
